Commissioner Janet C. Long is no stranger to public service. Her career in government began as a Legislative Aide working in the Old Capitol in Tallahassee. Commissioner Long served as the assistant to the Pinellas County Legislative Delegation from 1980 until 1986. In 1986, she was appointed by Commissioner Bill Gunter as the Deputy Insurance Commissioner with primary day to day management and oversight of the Regional Office in Pinellas County. She was reappointed by Insurance Commissioners Tom Gallagher and again by Commissioner Bill Nelson and served in that role until 1998.
Commissioner Long was elected to Seminole City Council in 2002 and served four years before being elected in 2006 to the Florida House of Representatives. She managed to pass five out of her six bills in her first year in office and served for four years. To ensure her constituents had a voice, she regularly held town hall meetings in her district and around Pinellas County on property taxes, the Lealman Fire District, and the Pinellas Park Water Management District.
While a member of the Florida Legislature she served on the Military & Veterans Affairs Policy Committee; the Economic Development & Community Affairs Policy Council; the General Government Policy Council; the Insurance, Business & Financial Affairs Policy Committee; the Education K-12 Committee and the Transportation & Economic Development Appropriations Committee.
Commissioner Long was first elected to the Pinellas County Commission in 2012 and was unopposed in 2016. As a countywide Pinellas County Commissioner, Janet C. Long serves on the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) Board, on the Executive Committee of Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council, Chairs the Tampa Bay Regional Resiliency Coalition subcommittee, and is appointed by Florida Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services Nikki Fried to the state’s Advisory Council on Climate & Energy. She also serves as Treasury/Secretary on the Tampa Bay Area Transit Authority (TBARTA) and is a member of Forward Pinellas, the Business Technology Services Board, Pinellas County Attorney Oversight Committee, Public Safety Coordinating Council, and the Health and Human Services Leadership Board. She represents Pinellas County on the Board of Directors for the Florida Association of Counties (FAC) and Chairs their Urban Caucus as well. In addition to her Pinellas County Board of County Commissioner appointments, she also serves on the Clearwater Central Catholic Advisory Board.
